Atlantic Center for Independent Living
The Civic Action and Engagement initiative is a partnership between the Atlantic Center for Independent Living and the Mental Health Association in New Jersey, Atlantic County. Both nonprofit organizations have a proven record of helping people with disabilities find or keep their independence, make life choices, and achieve their goals.
Our IHC initiative is centered around getting people involved in civic action in order to make the changes they wish to see in their communities. The initiative encompasses three key elements. The first consists of a curriculum to build the skills participants need to determine their path to civic engagement. The second involves coaching a select number of participants who demonstrate the desire and ability to expand their skills into practice. Coaching will facilitate fuller participation in public policy and decision-making within their communities. The third element is geared toward exploring ways people living with disabilities can impact the board recruitment process and increase inclusion of people with disabilities in decision-making bodies.
