About the presenters
Joy L. Chia is the Executive Director of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, a public foundation rooted in LGBTQI communities and movements working globally to advance the rights of LGBTQI people and communities. Astraea endeavors to mobilize and distribute resources so as to reach the activists and communities who need them most and who are best positioned to make transformational impact over time. Joy comes to Astraea from the Open Society Foundations (OSF), where she was team manager with the Women’s Rights Program (2018-2021) and the East Asia program officer (2012-2018).
Kristin Gardner is the Vice President of Strategic Engagement at the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, where she leads efforts to mobilize resources and share the stories of Astraea’s work towards liberation. Kristin’s career started in academia with a love of teaching, public speaking, and storytelling. As she transitioned into nonprofit leadership, she found herself grounded in a passion for working at the intersection of social justice and philanthropy. She’s led fundraising and communications efforts at organizations across New York City including Arthritis Foundation, Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, and The New York Women’s Foundation. Most recently, she served as Managing Director of Development and Communications at City Year New York–an organization focused on education equity–overseeing fundraising, external engagement, and communications.
The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice works for social, racial, and economic justice in the US and internationally. Our grantmaking and philanthropic advocacy programs help lesbians and allied communities challenge oppression and claim their human rights.
